Most of us are pretty aware of what to do when your child comes down with a sickness…and we know the remedy to treat it whether that means over the counter medicine, natural home remedies or going to see the doctor. But there are times I think to myself, “What should I feed this baby of mine to help her get well and to ease her discomfort?” I know that with the flu, limiting foods is best and you should stick with the BRAT diet. The BRAT diet is bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast. These are all gentle on the system when you or your child is down with the flu.

When it comes to the head cold…I have done research around best foods to give a suffering child or adult.

Chicken Soup

Studies show it clears nasal passages and congestion better than any other hot liquids. It also has an anti-inflammatory effect that may help your cold symptoms.

Citrus

If you take a lot of vitamin C as you notice cold-like symptoms it may make you feel better and get rid of a cold faster. Oranges, Lemons, Limes—they’re all sources of vitamin C and can be tasty, too.

Germ Fighters

Kale, broccoli, cranberries, green tea, red onions. What do these have in common? All have an antioxidant called quercetin that may help you fight the common cold. The research is pretty new, but they may be on to something.

Bring the Heat

They won’t cure the cold but chili peppers can clear the nasal passages, and that can make you feel better. They have something called capsaicin, which studies show may help with your stuffed up head.

Ginger

A cup of fresh, hot ginger tea can be great for nursing a cold. It helps clear congestion and soothe your throat all at once.

These remedies have proven to bring relief when your down and out for the count. Who wants to muster through a cold without trying something that has worked for others?!? So the next time you find yourself sticking Kleenex up your nose to avoid it running nonstop, try one of these handy tricks to soothe your symptoms.
