There’s something about the longer days, warmer air, and that first hint of green outside that makes me want to throw open the windows and tackle the mess that’s been quietly building all winter.
Spring has officially sprung, and with it comes that familiar urge to reset…not just our schedules, but our physical spaces too. I’ll be honest: I’m not a naturally organized person. Some days our house feels like a loving disaster zone of shoes by the door, art projects on the table, and mystery piles that somehow multiply overnight. But when spring hits, even I start craving a little more breathing room.
Why Decluttering in Spring Just Hits Different
After months of coats, boots, holiday decorations, and “I’ll deal with that later” piles, our homes can start to feel heavy. The kids have been cooped up, bringing in all the indoor energy (and clutter). We’ve been surviving on cozy routines, but now the sunshine is calling us outside…and it’s a lot easier to enjoy when the inside doesn’t feel chaotic.
Decluttering isn’t about achieving magazine-perfect spaces. It’s about creating room for the season we’re actually in: lighter mornings, backyard play, spontaneous picnics, and maybe even a little calm for us moms in the middle of it all.
For me, clearing out the physical stuff often clears out some mental stuff too. It’s like a fresh start that matches the fresh air outside.
Where to Start (Without Overwhelming Yourself)
If the thought of decluttering the entire house makes you want to hide under a blanket, you’re not alone. Here’s how I’m approaching it this spring — one small, doable step at a time:
- Begin with the easy wins. Start with a single drawer, a coat closet, or the kids’ winter gear bin. Pull everything out, sort into “keep,” “donate,” and “trash/recycle.” The visible progress gives you momentum without the all-day commitment.
- Involve the kids (in age-appropriate ways). Even little ones can help sort toys or match socks. Turn it into a game: “Let’s find ten things to say goodbye to!” It teaches them that stuff doesn’t have to own us, and it lightens the load for everyone.
- Focus on the high-traffic areas. The entryway, kitchen counters, and living room tend to collect the most daily chaos. Clearing these spots first makes the whole house feel calmer faster.
- Ask the magic questions: Do we use this? Do we love it? Does it belong in this season of life? Winter coats that no longer fit, broken toys, and random “just in case” items often don’t make the cut once spring arrives.
- Make it refreshing, not punishing. Play upbeat music, open the windows, and reward yourself with a cold drink or a walk outside when you finish a section. This isn’t about perfection — it’s about making space for joy.
The Real Gift of a Spring Declutter
When we let go of the excess, we make room for what matters most right now: more time outside, easier routines as we head toward summer, and a home that feels lighter instead of heavier.
I’ve noticed that after even a small decluttering session, the kids seem to play more peacefully, I feel less overwhelmed when I walk through the house, and there’s simply more space…both physically and mentally…for the good stuff of the season.
It’s not about having less for the sake of less. It’s about curating a home that supports the life we’re living in spring: lighter, brighter, and a little more free.
So if you’re feeling that spring pull to tidy and reset, lean into it gently. You don’t have to do it all today. Just start somewhere small, breathe in that fresh air, and enjoy the calm that follows.
What’s one space in your home that’s calling for a spring refresh? The toy explosion in the living room? The overflowing coat closet? Or maybe your own closet that still has heavy sweaters taking up space? Tell me in the comments…I’d love to hear what you’re tackling this season.
Here’s to fresh air, clearer counters, and a little more peace in our days,
Mary
