Hey mamas (and dads who sneak in here too),

Can we just pause for a second and admit it?

February sneaks up on us every single year. January is all fresh starts and big intentions, then boom…here comes the shortest month that somehow feels like it drags on forever with gray skies, leftover holiday clutter, and kids asking “Is it spring yet?” every five minutes.

But you know what?

February has this quiet magic if we lean into it. It’s the month of cozy blankets, extra cuddles, heart-shaped everything, and little celebrations that don’t require a huge production. As a mom juggling preschool mornings, snack demands, and trying to remember where I parked my own brain, I’ve learned that the best February memories are the simple ones we make together.

So grab your coffee (or tea… or cold leftover smoothie, no judgment), and let’s chat about the holidays and observances in February that are perfect for making the month feel special without adding more to your already overflowing plate.

Groundhog Day – February 2
Okay, this one cracks me up every year. Whether Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow or not, it’s the perfect excuse for a low-key family movie night or a silly craft. Last year we made paper bag groundhogs (Google “groundhog puppet craft” … super easy, uses stuff you already have), popped some popcorn, and watched the live stream of the big reveal while the kids shouted predictions. Spoiler: he saw his shadow, winter kept going, but our living room felt warmer because we were laughing together.

Pro tip: If the kids are little, skip the complicated crafts and just do shadow puppets with a flashlight after dark. They’ll talk about it for days.

Valentine’s Day – February 14
Ah, the big one. Hearts everywhere! I used to stress about making it Pinterest-perfect, but now I keep it real: homemade cards (even if they’re scribbles with “I luv u” in marker), a family breakfast with heart-shaped pancakes (use a cookie cutter—game changer), and little notes tucked into lunchboxes or under pillows. One year we did a “love bucket” where everyone wrote kind things about each other all week and read them on Valentine’s night. Tears happened. The good kind.

If you’re feeling crafty, try salt dough handprint hearts or just buy a pack of conversation hearts and play a silly guessing game. The kids don’t care if it’s fancy—they care that you showed up with love.

Presidents’ Day / Washington’s Birthday – February 16
This federal holiday is a great chance for a mini history lesson without it feeling like school. We do a cherry pie taste test (because cherries + George Washington = instant win), talk about leaders who helped our country, and sometimes make paper hats or do a “president for a day” where the kids get to make one family rule for the afternoon (usually “extra screen time” or “ice cream before dinner”—shocker). It’s light, it’s fun, and it sneaks in some learning.

Other Sweet Little February Moments Worth Celebrating

  • Galentine’s Day (Feb 13) — Grab your best mom friend for coffee or a quick playdate. We all need our people.
  • Random fun days like National Pizza Day (Feb 9), National Hug Day (Jan 21 but vibes carry over), or National Tortilla Chip Day. Grab some chips and salsa and call it homeschool science (texture! crunch! joy!).
  • Lunar New Year (varies, but often mid-Feb) — If your family celebrates or wants to learn, make simple lanterns or dumplings together.

Mamas, February isn’t about doing ALL the things. It’s about picking one or two that light you up and making them yours. Maybe it’s extra snuggles on the couch because it’s freezing outside. Maybe it’s letting the kids stay in pajamas all day and call it “cozy holiday mode.” Whatever it is, you’re already doing the most important part—you’re showing up for your people with love.So here’s to February: short days, big hearts, and tiny moments that turn into the memories we’ll talk about years from now.

What’s your favorite way to make February feel special?

Drop it in the comments…I’d love to hear (and probably steal) your ideas!

Hugs,
Mary
