Hey mamas! I don’t know about you, but January always hits me like a ton of bricks. The excitement of the holidays is over, the days are short and gray, and suddenly we’re all cooped up inside with restless little ones who have endless energy. As a mom to three young daughters, I’ve learned that winter doesn’t have to mean endless screen time or cabin fever — it can actually be a magical season full of cozy memories and simple fun. Here are some of my family’s go-to winter activities that work great for toddlers and preschoolers (and even bigger kids!). They’re easy, low-prep, and guaranteed to bring smiles.
1. Get Outside Anyway!
Even when it’s chilly, fresh air does wonders for everyone’s mood. Bundle up and head out for some simple outdoor play.

- Build a snowman (or a sandman if there’s no snow!).
- Go on a winter nature scavenger hunt — look for pinecones, bare trees, or animal tracks.
- Have a family snowball fight or make snow angels.
- A simple walk around the neighborhood while sipping hot cocoa in travel mugs feels like an adventure.
Pro tip: Come back inside to warm up with mugs of hot chocolate piled high with marshmallows. It’s the perfect reward!

2. Cozy Indoor Sensory Play
When it’s too cold to venture out, sensory bins are my lifesaver. They keep little hands busy and spark creativity.

Try a winter-themed sensory bin: Fill a shallow container with cotton balls or fake snow, add scoops, small toys, pinecones, and maybe some blue gems for “frozen ponds.” Toddlers love digging and exploring!
3. Curl Up with Books and Blankets
There’s nothing better than a lazy afternoon snuggled under blankets with good books. We rotate our winter favorites and make it a special ritual.
Some of my must-reads:
- The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats
- The Mitten by Jan Brett
- Owl Moon by Jane Yolen
- These quiet moments create the sweetest memories.Winter with little ones can feel long, but leaning into the season with simple, joyful activities makes it so much more bearable (and fun!). What are your favorite ways to beat the winter blues? Share in the comments — I’d love to hear your ideas!
- Stay warm, friends!
- XOXO. Mary
