The hustle and bustle of the day begins at 7:00 AM in our household. Father’s Day was no different but Ben was already out the door and in the Ann Arbor, MI area before the girls uttered their first word for the day. I was in the basement working out when I heard:

“Happy Father’s Day to you,

Happy Father’s Day to you,

Happy Father’s Day dear Daddy,

Happy Father’s Day to yyyyoooouuu!!!”

I quickly walked up the stairs and into Annora’s bedroom (my 4.5 year old) and she was in full song mode…singing at the top of her young little lungs. She was so excited to wish her daddy a GREAT day and celebrate him! When she found out he was up north at church, she decided she wanted to make him a Father’s Day video. She planned out her “script” and was ready to make magic happen. I was amazed at how quickly she was ready to share her feelings and how special Ben makes her life on a day to day basis (especially through her eyes). She came up with 4 or 5 reasons she loves him so much and we began taping it. We were done in a matter of minutes and she begged me to allow her to watch the video after I had done some editing.

As I was watching Annora re-watch the video she had made for Ben, it hit me how so many of us are reluctant to share how much we care for someone or how they have affected our lives in a positive way.  Why is that I wonder? I know for me, sometimes it is a pride thing or a “that is silly, they will think I am strange” thing. But when I watched Annora’s face as she watched her video, it became clear to me that making someone else’s day pleasant or nice (maybe with a simple compliment), truly does fill our own tanks just as much as the person getting the compliment.

My goal is to make it a point to tell those that I care about and love, how much they mean to me and how they have impacted my life. Not to just fill my tank, but to fill theirs. Who doesn’t want to hear how they have touched the lives of others?!? And the thought of waiting until it is too late seems incentive enough to do it sooner rather than later.
